“…Some seeds fell beside the road, …others fell on rocky places, …others fell among the thorns, …others fell on the good soil…” (Matthew 13:3-8)

We never know what eternal consequences our words will have in the lives of people who cross our path.

This week, I was at an office working on a machine when someone came in cursing by using Jesus’ name in vain. I couldn’t take it lightly, and quickly replied, “He is alive!” He didn’t say anything, and quickly exited the room. I just pray that the Lord will use those words in that man’s life to think of Jesus in a different light.

Last Saturday, Jesús and his son Junior went to the Latino community on Southwest Blvd to do street evangelism on their own initiative. Some listened respectfully to the gospel message; others were rather antagonist. One said that he already was a Christian, but had not been attending any church. He said he would like to visit our church, on Sunday. Then, as frequently happens, he did not show up on Sunday. Please pray that the seed planted will germinate. Pray that other believers would follow the example of these two faithful servants of the Lord.

Charles Rodrigues

P.S. Please pray for Jose and his family. He is the man that I have been discipling for the last year. He is facing a very difficult time, and needs our prayers for strength to do the right thing.

Do you remember Snoopy cartoons? Of course you do. Remember pesky little Lucy, who would hold the football for Charlie Brown to kick? And as he ran to kick it, Lucy yanked the ball away and Charlie fell flat on his back. That was pretty funny to Lucy, and the readers, though poor Charlie was probably thinking, “this is NOT how I expected football to be.”

Some of you may know that, despite my sweet demeanor (stop laughing), I have a background of practical joking in the workplace – which is why I’m no longer employed. Yes, I have dribbled taco sauce into someone’s coffee; I have replaced coke bottles in vending machines with empty ones; I have coerced secretaries to tell bosses they’re pregnant and leaving, never to return. I just got a kick from the look on people’s faces when they didn’t say anything, but I knew they were thinking, “this is NOT what I expected the business world to be!”

Haven’t we all had days like that, where we think, “this is NOT what I expected my career to be” — “…my marriage to be” – “…parenthood to be” – “…retirement to be” … etc., etc.

Ya know what’s really a hoot? Before my salvation, and even sometimes since then, when things seemed to go wrong – I actually suspected that God was playing some great cosmic practical joke on me for His own amusement! My life was simply not going as I imagined! My preconceived ideas of how my life was supposed to go tripped me up and left me sometimes lying flat on my back, not moving, and sometimes mumbling, “very funny, Lord.” Thankfully, He’s very patient with me and didn’t hold a grudge. Instead, He showed me that His ways and thoughts are oh-so-much higher than mine (Isaiah 55:8-9). It’s okay for me to make plans, but I can’t be surprised if He decides to take me places I never expected to go (Proverbs 16:9). And “to go” is the idea, not just sit there and say “what happened?” I’m to continue on in obedience, doing the works He has prepared for me to do (James 1:22; Ephesians 2:10). Isn’t it wonderful to know that when the Lord God intervenes in my life, He is not laughing at me, but instead, I’m continually being sanctified for His glory.
